For adults, the following remedies are suggested: try to hold your breath for a moment and count 1-10. Try to revise the English alphabet backward or in reverse order. Put 1 tbsp. of sugar under your tongue. Eat something that is not easy to swallow or make use of smelling salts.
The said remedies helps in preventing hiccups but if it did not stop, then you must make an appointment to a doctor for check up. Doctors will usually prescribe medicines to suppress the hiccups.
